What Does Medicare Cover?
Anyone holding a current Medicare card has access to:
- One comprehensive eye test every three years (for those under 65 years)
- One comprehensive eye test every year (if you’re 65 +)
- Contact lens consultations (within a specific range of optical prescriptions)
- Eye tests as needed if you have an eye condition, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration
Are All Eye Tests Covered by Medicare?
Medicare doesn’t cover all eye tests. Eye tests for contact lenses, vision therapy or dry eye typically require additional payment.
What About Private Health Funds?
Private health funds usually don’t cover eye tests, however, this can depend on your policy. Some policies cover up to 100% of the cost of frames, prescription lenses or contact lenses.
